CM Punk on Vincent McMahon's departure and the culture at WWE

Updated: Aug 1, 2022

CM Punk commented on Vince McMahon's departure and what, if anything, it means for the cultural climate at the WWE.

During a Q&A at this year's San Diego Comic-Con on July 23rd, former WWE Champion and current AEW Champion CM Punk was asked his thoughts on WWE CEO Vince McMahon's resignation and what that would mean for the company moving forward.

McMahon announced last week that he would be stepping down from all positions effective immediately, his shoes to be filled by his daughter, Stephanie McMahon, and Nick Khan working together as co-CEOs and Stephanie's husband, Paul Levesque - better known as Hunter Hearst Helmsley or 'Triple H' - assuming the role of Head of Talent Development and Creative.

McMahon's resignation comes in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct within the company.

When asked about the shift in WWE's leadership, CM Punk didn't seem convinced much would change in the way the company operates internally.

"I don't think the structure there, I don't think the culture there changes, at all."

Punk goes on to mention the departure of Sasha Banks and Naomi from the WWE, when they walked out on Monday Night Raw this past May. He compares the company's handling of the situation to that of Brock Lesnar's recent walk out in reaction to McMahon's resignation.

"Mercedes and Trinity leave, and they announce on SmackDown that gosh darn, we're so disappointed in them and they really let our fans down... well, Brock splits, comes back obviously, he worked the show, but where's Michael Cole saying 'Man, Brock Lesnar really let these fans down'?"

Punk continues, questioning why the two female stars were treated in such a way when Lesnar was chased and talked back into the ring.

"What's changed, y'know? Nothing much that's changed. There's people that talk about it and people that do it, and the people who lick the boots and have the audacity to go on live television and say that about those two women. F**king cowards and boot-lickers, sh*t's ridiculous."
